Medical Scribe

July 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I enjoy shadowing physicians and learning about the medical field. It has been an amazing job and has enabled me to develop leadership skills and medical terminology that I will most definitely use in my aspired PA career.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't really change anything about the job, as it has provided me with invaluable experiences.

Advice

I would recommend anyone in the pre-medical field to work as a medical scribe as it provides a lot of medical knowledge and experience that will further help with acceptance to PA/medical school.

What I liked

Schedules are flexible and they work with your school schedule. Managers are very understanding about days you may need off and help you find coverage for shifts. You get discounts on grad school test prep. You get hands on experience working with medical records and get to work alongside physicians and med students and they love to give advice. You learn something new every single day (terminology, different diseases, medications, lab orders/why physicians prescribe them). You learn about the doctor/patient relationship and how to handle conflicts.

What I wish was different

Advice

Make the most of your time as a scribe, get to know the physicians you work with, ask if you can cross train to learn about different specialties, and ask your coworkers, trainers, and the physicians you work with a lot of questions, it's a great learning experience! Get to know the physicians you work with as they can write you letters of recommendation for med school, PA school, nursing school, etc.

If you are a pre-med student this is an invaluable opportunity to see and be a part of real medicine. What I liked

Working in the ER at Saint John's Medical Center has been fantastic! As a scribe, I get to look into each patient's past medical history, assist the physicians with the Electronic Medical Record, and even accompany the physicians into the rooms to interact with the patients. It's a great experience for pre-med students, made even better by the other scribes who share many of the same interests.

What I wish was different

It took about 2 months to get all the HR and training things out of the way. Learning to scribe takes a while, but once you get the hang of it, it's actually kind of fun. I only wish that I had been more personable with the physicians while I was in training so I could make a better first impression, but as I've worked more I've developed much better relationships with all of them. There's just so many, and they're always so busy that it's a little hard to strike up a conversation with them. But they're all pretty nice

Advice

Apply early! Like I said, the HR stuff takes a while to get through, and then the online and clinical training to be a scribe is a bit intensive, so make sure you have time for this. And once you become a scribe, don't be afraid to ask the physicians questions! Most of them are happy to share stories or info with the scribes. Overall, I highly recommend the job.

What I liked

I loved the experience. The physicians I scribed for were wonderful, willing to teach, and had very good advice to give.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to stay working while in Nursing school because I would be practicing my TC skills more.

Advice

Don’t give up. At first, it can be overwhelming due to all the typing and charting but you’ll get better with practice. Dont get discouraged.
