What I liked

The practical experience and level of responsibility is what GE does best with their internships. I felt I was an equal contributor to the team and everyone there is more than willing to help you learn as much as you can.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a slightly different role. I enjoyed the role, but it was similar to what I did in my previous rotation at GE.

Advice

Similar to any generic advice, ask as many questions early on, so you can get a good jump on your assignment. The rotation goes quickly, so the quicker you learn, the more of an impact you'll be able to make.

Additive Sourcing Co-op

What I liked

One of my favorite parts about working with additive technology was how cutting edge and new it was. I never would have imagined it was possible to 3D print jet engine parts. I got to aid in creating processes, pitching solutions, work right on the shop floor with technicians, and more. I had the ability to be independent and own my roles, but also had guidance when I needed it.

Mayor's SummerWorks Intern (Manufacturing Production Worker)

What I liked

I got a lot of hands-on experience working both on the factory line and with the engineering team. When on the factory line, I was able to immerse myself in the manufacturing process and see things from another perspective when talking with the team.

What I wish was different

The hours were kind of rough [6:00 am - 3:30 pm] and the managers weren't the best in all honesty.

Advice

Don't be afraid to watch the manufacturing process quickly and give recommendations on how it could be improved!! I made a few small changes in my time there to the control systems set in place given the permission of the team.

I never did anything in the lab.

Most boring job ever. Be prepared to hate it, but it was worth the above average pay.

Verification and Validation Engineering Co-op

What I liked

My co-workers in Madison were very encouraging and inclusive. There is a great culture at the ARC Madison campus.

What I wish was different

The project I worked on while I was working was more computer oriented so there were less engineering based activites.

Advice

Join After-5! It's a great way to network with other employees outside of business hours.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

The work environment was amazing, with constant encouragement to learn and passion displayed by my coworkers. I enjoyed being challenged and giving new assignments on a regular basis.

What I wish was different

Accessibility services were basically nonexistent, and much of the analytics were not carried out in a uniform fashion. Having to work with multiple systems made it significantly more complicated.

Advice

Come in with an open mind and be ready for anything. Don't be afraid to branch out and learn about different parts of the workplace, even if it's not necessarily related to your job.

Field service Engineer

What I liked

I liked the fact that they were training me on so many devices. There were some medical devices that I had only seen on paper but with this apprenticeship, I got to not only see but work on some of them.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more in the engineering sector and not the field service sector. I liked travelling from one hospital to another but I hated the fact that I had no set schedule. Some weeks I get 40hours other weeks I don't.

Advice

Internships and apprenticeship are very vital in career advancement. It gives you an idea of what courses you should take after returning to school.

Digital Technologies Intern

What I liked

I had a great experience working for GE over the summer. I immediately felt like I was a part of the team and my ideas were always considered and taken as seriously as those of full-time employees. I learned a ton about how a corporate company runs and how projects are carried out within it.

What I wish was different

Personally, the only hardship I faced was the fact that there was only one other UI/UX designer that I was working with, and he was a contractor. I would have liked to see how the team functioned with an in-house designer or two who were always there to bounce ideas off of. I think GE Research could benefit from having a UI/UX designer as a full-time employee.

Advice

This was my first internship experience, so I had no idea what to expect. I was overwhelmed at first when we immediately jumped into a project, but I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the inner workings of the company and how to better present myself and my work. I was able to showcase what I've learned from my college education so far, which greatly increased my confidence.

Finance/Engineering Intern

What I liked

Pushed me way outside of my comfort zone to develop and pitch out financial modeling results to inform supplier contract negotiations. Not an experience you can get everywhere.

What I wish was different

More frequent feedback would be appreciated but that is very manager dependent. Overall, incredible manager experience.

Advice

This is not a company or industry for the feint hearted. You will work hard but with hard work comes great rewards.

What I liked

This position was catered directly to my experience, knowledge and interests. It most definitely expanded my current interests as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to collaborate more with the rest of my team. my role was working directly with the IT Controller and CISO, but the rest of the team had significant technical experience, and I wish I had an environment where I was tasked to collaborate with others around me more that weren't directly associated with my project.

Advice

All organizations have different interests at stake. It is important to use the current experience to understand how other organizations may choose to operate.

Design/Test Engineer

What I liked

Worked with lead engineers, in the United States and Poland, to develop and perform valve test using a low flow stand and data acquisition system to capture port pressures, mass flow rates, and slew rate times; Validated hardware and electrical component specifications to identify and resolve potential defects to improve product quality; Authored engineering test request and reports; Led and conducted engineering lab testing for a variety of projects for new product development.

What I wish was different

The on-boarding process is rough for the first two weeks at GE. They are currently getting better at this process.

Advice

Overall, every MECE student should try to Co-op with GE Aviation. It's truly a great engineering experience, learning environment, and networking opportunity.
