Amusement Park Games Lead

May - August 2019 • Monticello, IN

What I liked

I enjoy being outside. My job was to manage the games employees. I created schedules, stocked games, trained new employees, and made sure my employees were hydrated. I also would be called by Guest Relations to fix arcade games. This involved interpersonal skills, because the arcade machines would "take [the guest's] money." Guests are not very happy when their money gets taken, so I also did a lot of work to make our guests happy. On occasion, I would also run games, in which I would have lots of fun putting on a show for the guests.

What I wish was different

In the past, our department has had 4-6 leads, my position. This year our manager wanted to make sure leads were consistently busy, so we only had 2 leads. Needless to say, my fellow lead and I were clearly over-worked and underpaid for the amount of work we did. We would work 12 hour days, 6 days a week out in the heat. We needed more breaks in air condition.

Advice

One thing that I would consistently explain to the games employees is to make your job fun. This is a fun job, if you make it fun. If you come to work and stand at your game sulking, its going to be a long shift. You have to make the best of standing in 90 degree heat for long hours. Make your job fun!
