Marketing Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Sioux Falls, SD

What I liked

I loved being able to work for such an amazing company that values work, the employees, and their customers. I was able to conduct research to help improve patient experience in the hospitals. I also ran a competitive brief on a weekly basis informing our team of what competitors in the health industry were doing.

What I wish was different

Sanford's internship system changed recently, where before they would have mini teams where you can get a full exposure to the marketing department. This year, the system only worked where I was placed in the research department. I was able to shadow other departments, but I would have loved it if I was exposed to the whole marketing department during my internship.

Advice

Do not be scared to step outside your comfort zone when applying for internships. I did not have much background on patient care / the health field when applying for this internship, but at the end I was able to get more experience with conducting research for a company and learning more about the healthcare industry!

Server Administration Intern

May - August 2018 • Sioux Falls, SD

What I liked

I loved being able to apply coursework to the real world. There are some experiences you just cannot simulate in a classroom environment. In addition, I received great advice from my manager in regards to professional development and navigating the professional workplace.

What I wish was different

I was uncertain of the specific duties and responsibilities of my position right away. I wish I would have gone in with a little more knowledge in this area. I believe this would have enabled me to hit the ground running at the start of my internship.

Advice

Be a pioneer. Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do. Don't be afraid to ask questions to learn how you can contribute to the team's efforts.

Nursing Intern

June - August 2018 • Sioux Falls, SD

What I liked

I enjoyed the atmosphere of the floor. The team worked well together and I felt comfortable asking questions to anyone on the floor. They were always willing to help each other and wanted to provide the best care for their patients. They set you up with another nurse on the floor who guide you through the summer helping to answer any questions, challenge you to grow in your nursing skills and knowledge, and develop a relationship with you as a fellow nurse. I grew in my nursing skills and knowledge throughout the summer and feel very confident in becoming a nurse and providing wholistic care for my patients with the experience I had at Sanford. The program set me up for what to expect on the floor and wanted me to get the most out of the summer as possible. They provided observation experiences in other departments and other ways to get to know the nursing interns from the various schools.

What I wish was different

One of the loose ends was finding housing. The white scrub tops was not ideal due to all the stains I developed throughout the summer. Overall, it was a good experience.

Advice

Ask lots of questions and get into as many experiences as possible. Take advantages of all the opportunities they provide.

Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Sioux Falls, SD

What I liked

I enjoyed the level of growth I achieved in terms of confidence and independence in the lab. This was my second summer at Sanford (and in the particular lab I was in), and I could see the growth I made as a researcher when comparing these two experiences. Part of this was due to the amazing mentors I had, who encouraged me to branch out, ask questions, and be confident in my lab experience.

What I wish was different

I always feel back when I'm at work and not constantly working. The nature of biochemical research means that there is usually time sitting around waiting for incubation or cell growth. I tried to take on extra projects, update my lab notebook, and do lab chores, but there's only so much to do when you're an intern and not a full-time employee.

Advice

I would say that you shouldn't be afraid to ask questions. It may feel uncomfortable or bothersome at first, but your peers and superiors will appreciate your thoroughness. It is better to ask questions and do the job right than do a job you're unsure about and end up with an incorrect product. Accidents happen, but many mistakes can be prevented by double checking and asking clarifying questions.

Nursing Intern

June 2018 • Sioux Falls, SD

What I liked

I loved being a nursing intern at Sanford Health. Under the supervision of my RN preceptor, I was able to conduct almost all functions of a registered nurse. By building a relationship with my preceptor, I have a mentor that I can ask questions to. I gained skills in managing a full patient load, conducting nursing skills, and learning to chart education and care plans.

GI Aide

May - August 2018 • Sioux Falls, SD

What I liked

I loved being able to interact with patients! Most of them were just so happy after their procedure, especially if you were bringing food to them. I was able to watch a couple of procedures as well as see if I would like working in a hospital setting in the future. (PS. free meal every day you volunteer!!!)

What I wish was different

I don't think there is anything that could be different honestly. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help patients or gain some experience at a hospital.

Advice

I would say make sure to ask questions if you happen to have any! The nurses and PCAs are so nice and willing to help you. If you want to do more work, just ask if anyone needs any help (obviously you can't do things like IVs, but you can do other things).

Pharmacy Intern

May 2018 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

I enjoyed working with several different pharmacists in a hospital setting, which I have not experienced before. I liked the training portion of the job and thought it was very well thought out. I am comfortable and happy with my internship.

What I wish was different

The hours are not my favorite. Because I am an intern, the hours are not consistent. They schedule me sporadically and on different types of shifts.

Advice

I would highly suggest getting a second job if hoping to be employed as an intern there. It will help get a consistent in

Certified Nursing Assistant

July 2018 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

I have loved working with patients on the post-surgical floor. It has been an honor to be present and helpful as they heal and it has been such a joy to watch my patients walk out of the hospital as a result of good care. Both my fellow nurse aides and the nurses have been incredibly kind, compassionate, welcoming, and encouraging.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had applied earlier in the summer, perhaps before I got my certification, so that I might have had the chance to do more before going back to school.

Advice

If you are pre-med, working as a CNA or phlebotomist are good ways to get into a hospital setting and test out the atmosphere. If you want to be a CNA for the money, work in a long-term care facility instead.
